How to use Modelene

Brief Overview

MODELENE is a plastic modelling material which can be permantly hardened when desired. It’s ease of use and the fact that no expensive equipment is required, makes it an art medium suitable for all ages, for both the artist or the hobbyist. All you need are your hands, a few simple tools, and an ordinary home oven.

Before using, Modelene must be "conditioned". This simply means that it is kneaded with the hands until it becomes soft and pliable.

To "cure" the material it is placed in an oven at 130degC (270degF) for 10-15 mins (depending on thickness of finished piece). Once cool, it becomes strong and flexible and may be further worked on if required. It will also withstand multiple bakings.

Modelene comes in either 60gm, 360gm or 1kg blocks in a range of bright, attractive colours which may be mixed together to create any colour you wish.

Care should be taken to store the material AWAY FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT, even through a window. Direct sunlight can heat MODELENE enough to cause the surface to harden permanently or at the very least make it impossible to use.

Once hardened, MODELENE can be carved, sculpted, painted, stamped, textured, sanded, drilled and polished. It can be used to simulate semi-precious stones, metals, wood, "mille fiori"; the ancient Venetian method of making glass beads, and may even be silk-screened onto. By using any one of the above techniques, which is by no means a complete list, or a combination of several you can create jewellery, buttons, ’ancient artifacts’, and many ornamental items for your home. The list is endless.the possibilities are only limited by your imagination!

Detailed instructions on how you can use MODELENE

1. When opening the block of Modelene, save the plastic covering for future storage of the unused material. Although "Modelene" will not harden until it is baked, colour separation is important to maintain clarity.

2. This product is supplied in a firm state, and requires kneading to acquire the full elasticity inherent in the material for modeling. Knead the required amount with your hands until it is pliable

3. Roll out the softened material so that shapes can easily be cut with a knife, eg., leaves, brooch bases or plaques.

4. Hand rolling is the basis of decoration for larger pieces. You will find that "Modelene" can be manipulated into very thin strips that can be cut or coiled to form an endless variety of shapes. The use of a garlic press to extrude "modelene" is also a method which will provide "hair" and other interesting results.

5. To obtain colour and form combinations, plaiting will provide an even distribution of two or more colours for more colours for striping and marbling

6. Delightful pastel shades of these brilliant colours can be achieved by intermixing a small piece of coloured Modelene with a greater volume of white, and kneading well.

7. To harden permanently, bake in a middle re-heated oven at 270oF (130oC) for approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on the thickness of your model. As oven temperatures vary considerably, it is wise to test a small piece of material first. An oven that is too hot will scorch and then burn, conversely insufficient heat will not harden and will need re-baking.

Larger works will need supporting due to the "jelly like" stage which precedes the cooling and final hardening of the product.

8. When your work has cooled, final cold glazing or painting may enhance your finished product. Other fittings for jewellery may be attached with a suitable adhesive.
